QUESTION: I have read many answers on how to rig a tie-on boom.  I do not understand them.  Can you direct me to photos or videos on how to tie the knots to attach a tie-on boom?

ANSWER: I do not know of any information outside of what I know of how to tie a boom to the mast as this is an ancient are LOL.
Here's how you do it.  First of all it cannot be done with modern sails with battens.  It can only be done using a soft sail without large lower battens.  
1. insert mast into sail sleeve, push the mast all the way up to the tip of the sail.
2. place your boom with the back end toward the tip of the mast and lay the boom tie on part to the sail opening on the mast.
3. Make sure you know where you want the boom (boom height on the mast) to be attached within the open sail area on the boom.  
4. Downhaul the sail slightly but do not stretch the clew out.
5. Position the boom so that the tie on part is outside the mast and tail of the boom is up toward the tip of the mast but on the inside of the mast so that the mast is parallel with the boom.
6. With the boom parallel to the mast, tie the front end of boom to the mast.
7. When is it tight and secure, pull the back end of the boom down (lever it down) to where it will be level and attach to the clew.  You need to tie the boom to the mast when the mast is parallel to the boom and once the boom is tight, when you pull down on the back end of the boom it will further tighten your connection to the mast.
It sounds more complicated than it is but this is the only way to get the boom tight to the mast using a tie on system.

Yes, just make sure the boom is made for standard diameter masts which most are.  RDM masts (reduced diameter masts) are smaller in circumference and some booms are made specifically for them but most masts are made for standard circumference.

Yes, it is much easier to assemble your rig with a clamp on boom and the it is much easier to sail when the boom is tight to the mast with no wiggle whatsoever between mast and boom.  Some booms do lever up and down slightly but the connection at the mast should be tight.
