Kerma Mach 3
Question
QUESTION: I have a Kerma Mach 3 that is about 16 years old. It is all there and in very good shape and worked fine in 1996. The mast pivot joint won't lock into the board now, but the rubber is still pliable; it just won't expand when you turn the knob. Can this be fixed and is it worth the effort ?
ANSWER: Sounds like the mechanism that expands the rubber is stripped inside. Old parts are near impossible to find. If you are very handy and crafty you may be able to fabricate a new insertion pin but honestly, sailing a board this old is more effort than it's worth. The boards that are within 6 or 8 years old are far superior in sailing ease and rigging. Try to find a used board online like Craigslist locally and make sure it is not more than 8 years old. Older boards tend to be become porous and absorb water which causes excess weight.
---------- FOLLOW-UP ----------
QUESTION: I would like to ask a follow-up question regarding if it is possible to attach a modern mast base to an older board, being aware of the older board's limitations. I want it as a trainer for the kids and finanaces are limited (lost job).
Answer
The modern mast bases will not fit into the Kerma board. The part of the device that is not working on your Kerma mast foot is specific to the board. If you have any windsurfing shops in your area, bring the mast foot and show them and they may have a suggestion.
