old u-joint for magnum
Question
hey, i bought an old magnum windsurfing board. (old as in 25 years) it has the original mast, sail, centerboard and board. the only part i need is the u-joint i've been looking online but i don't know exactly what i'm looking for. the board has two mounting holes near the center of the board. the mast has some sort of swivel joint but it has a rusted bolt on the bottom. (see attached photo) what id like to know what pieces i need of if they don't exist, is there a way to convert the board to use a more modern configuration. (please tell me i didn't just get scammed)
Answer
Hey Joey,
Your photo didn't show up but u-joints come in three types, standard hourglass, mechanical, & tendon.
Here is a place to get replacement parts for your base.

The one thing I need to warn you about is, be careful with the plastic parts of your base as they are not replaceable. The part that goes into the board is the most important as it is a manufacturer specific part and is no longer made. Anything above the u-joint is replaceable with aftermarket parts at the Chinook website. When trying to remove rusty parts, be sure to use some penetrating oil to loosen the parts. When putting new parts back on, use Blue locktight on the threads. Blue with prevent loosening but is removable. Red locktight is almost permanent so don't use Red.
Hope this helps.
Keep on sailing,
