Curtis Hawk Brand New Board
Question
I may be able to purchase a brand new, never used 20 year old (give or take)Curtis Hawk windsurfer. I have seen a couple of comments stating there old and way past there prime. I windsurf much more in the 90's and with a new cottage want to get back into it. For the price it is more than half the cost of any new package I can find. Is it worth it or better to spend the money and get something with later technology.
thanks

Answer
Hey Brad,
That is definitely an old school board. You won't relive your glory days of sailing '90's gear but it will function as a decent lake board.
My concern would be the price. Are they asking what would amount to half the price of a new rig? With new rigs running $600-1000+, they may be wanting more than it is worth, even if it is in excellent condition. Even in 'never used' condition, I wouldn't pay more than $100.
Here are some reasons you don't want to pay very much. I'm not sure, but I don't think that the mast foot is a standard type. If there are just a couple of holes for the mast base, then it is specific base to that board. If the base ever breaks, it will be almost impossible to replace it. If you loose the daggerboard, again, almost impossible to replace. If there is a slot/track for the mast base to connect to, then it would take a standard mast base which are readily available as an aftermarket item.
It really depends on how much you are willing to spend and what type of sailing you are looking to do. If it is light wind lake sailing and using it as a Stand Up Paddle board, then this board would work fine if you get it for a good price.
If you are wanting some speed and planning type sailing, then this is not the board you want. You definitely need to look for newer gear if you want to sail medium to high winds.
Hope this helps.
Keep on sailing,
Windlover
