ski damage?
Question
Are my skis damaged if they had the really goopy wax left on all summer? I did that, and I really don't want to damage my skis. Also, how often do I need to tune my skis? once a year?
Thanks so much!
Answer
hi and thanks for the questions...
the "goopy wax" for summer is the best thing for them as it protects the bases from drying out and the edges from too much rust builing up - especially if you're near the coast.
You can either have it scraped back or just ski it off - depends on the snow conditions when you go.
Before each season, it's a good idea to have your skis tuned and bindings checked. So take in a boot and have them done - this will make sure you're bindings are in good working order and not rusted or stuck - in which case they may not do what it is you're expecting of them - releasing your foot in a fall.
Ski tuning should be done every 3-6 days of skiing. Tuning involves deburring the bases, cleaning off any buildup [tree saps, oil etc], and can also include filling in any holes, scrapes and scars ensuring the bases are in their best condition.
Depends where you ski and what conditions you have. In icy or hard snow - tuning ensures you have a good edge to ski on, in powder and fresh stuff you'll need the wax to ensure you get down the hill.
Untuned skis are also harder to ski on - they can be like a car without power steering.
The when you're done for the season, have the summer wax put back on after tuning and you'll be good to go.
Have a great season...
