will shorter skis help me on moguls?
Question
I currently ski in New England; I'd call myself advanced intermediate (learned to ski at 21; go about 20 days per year for the past 10 years). I'm 42, 205 lbs., 6'3". I currently ski on Atomic Beta Ride 10.20, 190cm; a buddy is looking to unload a pair of hardly used Volkl Motion P50s' 168 cm. Reviews seems good for this, but I haven't had a chance to demo yet;. In general, what would the pluses and minuses be of going to a much shorter ski like this? I do like to go fast, but also am interested in tighter turns and keeping up with my two sons in the glades and trying to master moguls. stats on these skis are 103/63/92 mm; radius 16.2 mm. Do you think these skis would be too short for me?
Thanks for any insight!
Answer
Hi Peter,
The 168 is going to be a little short for you at 6'3, but not impossibly so. Mostly, you'll notice that you won't have a ton of grip on ice (unless you are carving the skis radius or bigger). Thats the only drawback- but since the "right" length for you is about a 175 (in that ski)- you are not far off. I've skied it in a 168, but I'm 5'10 (also 205).
They should be great in the bumps, although a bit narrow for anything other than eastern conditions. If your friend is giving you a great deal, then you won't go wrong to have these skis- you'll really benefit from going to a 16 meter radius ski from the 20 meter arc of the beta ride.
Enjoy them!
