snow skis for my 12 yr old son

Question
My son is just learning to downhill ski.  He is 12 yrs old, 5' 11" and weighs 90 pounds.  What is the best, most economical ski to get for him?

Answer
Hey Jenny,

For all beginner to intermediate skiers, an all-mountain ski is normally recommended. Look for something that will be considered an entry level ski. It's not necessary to buy the top of the line ski for his level. Entry level skis will be the best price. As he progresses and gets into an intermediate/advanced level of skiing, then he should consider looking for a ski that will suit the type of skiing that he prefers. This will probably be in two or three more seasons depending upon the amount of days he skis and number of lessons he takes. As for length, with the ski tail on the floor, the tip should come between his nose and eyebrows. Considering his age, I would suggest the eyebrow length or maybe 5-8 cm longer as he will probably grow some more before he's ready for a new pair of skis.

You can shop at your local stores and get both of you better informed on what size he should be looking for and what models are entry level. If you are on a budget, get informed and then consider shopping used at local swap meets, craigslist, or ebay. At a swap meet there will be lots of people to help choose something that will work for him. You may also find good sales on new skis at larger swap meets. This is the time of year for swap meets so start asking around so you don't miss the good ones.

Hope this helps.
Keep on skiing,
Windlover
