new snowboarder
Question
My friend just introduced me to snowboarding and I'm hooked (though very much a rookie).
Please tell me 1) where is a good place to purchase snowboards and shoes for cheap, 2) what are key things to look for when purchasing equipment, and 3) where are good places in or near Southern California to go snowboarding.
Thanks!
Answer
Hey L,
There are many places to buy a used board for cheap. Pawn shops, used sporting goods stores, ebay, friends, classifieds, etc. Be sure to check the base (bottom) for deep scratches/gouges/repairs. Be wary of anything deeper than 1/16 in deep. As for the bindings, look for wear and tear, loose parts, etc. If you can, try before you buy. Also look for minor cracking on the top cap near the edges. Look closely at anything used and you can tell if it has been trashed or cared for.
As for boots, they are the most important item. If you can afford them, buy new for the best fit and comfort. If not, be very picky about how used ones feel. If they are not comfortable at first try, then they won't be on the hill either.
Snowboarding in southern cal can be found at Mammoth Mountain, Big Bear, and around Lake Tahoe for the best choices. Check out www.goski.com for great info on all resorts around the usa and the world.
Good luck and happy riding,
