The gift that keeps on giving

Hi Windlover,
I can't decide on a Christmas present for my partner. I know he would really like to open a gift filled with Telemark skiis, but I do not want to make a bad choice for him. I have never used telelmark skiis, so I need help -if I'm going to do this thing right. He is 37yo, 6 feet tall, and 200 pounds. He loves powder, but it isn't always an option...so I know he's into something practical and versatile (for those average snow days). I should also point out that I do not want to spend an arm and a leg (which to me would be over $700). He is an advanced skier. What brands and types would you recommend, and I live in the Salt Lake Area. Thanks in advance for any help, and I appreciate your advice. -Alissa

Hey Alissa,

There are a lot of great tele skis to choose from. My favorite brands are Black Diamond and K2. Rossignol, Atomic, and Tua also make good tele skis.

It sounds like you will be looking for an all mountain ski that will work well in the powder along with the groomed. You can shop online directly for Black Diamond skis at  www.blackdiamondequipment.com, or review their skis and buy at your local shop. Buying at a local shop ensures proper mounting and customer support after the sale. I would recommend the Verdict.

Review K2's here www.k2telemark.com/home.asp?Lang=English. For K2 I would recommend the Work Stinx.

For Rossignol  http://www.rossignol.com and I would recommend Dirtybird.

As for bindings, if he is going to be doing backcountry skiing then look for lightweight bindings or maybe touring bindings. Black Diamond, Garmont, and G3 are some of the top brands. If he plans to stay mainly inbounds then check out www.bombertele.com for the top rated resort binding. I'm partial to them as they are what I use. Extremely well built and worth every penny.

For some great deals on skis, check out Sierra Trading Post, craigslist, ebay, and local swap meets. I actually checked craigslist in Salt Lake and there are some K2's still in the plastic wrap for a great price. The HeliStinx or the AntiPiste would work well for him. At those prices you can go for the Bomber Bishop bindings and still be in budget.

As for length and his abilities, you should go with as long as you can find. 188-200cm should work for him.
