base waxing and tuning

Question
After hot waxing the base.    How much wax should by scraped off?.
for example :  leave a thin layer? , scrape it till there is nothing to scrape off anymore? .
How can you tell when to stop scraping?
Do you recommend using universal wax since the conditions I ride in vary allot.

Answer
Hi Alex-

You want to scrape the wax off, but not so intensely that plastic comes off as well. Ideally, wax is in the base, rather than on it. This is why it is important to have a thick plastic scraper that is absolutely flat. The edges will prevent you from going too far, so long as you don't flex the scraper. Many shops use scraper sharpeners- you can get the desired result by clamping your scraper between two boards, and filing it flat against the wood support.

Get yourself a nylon base brush, and a brass or copper one if you can for cold temp wax. These help remove the excess wax, and expose the base structure. Without structure (texture) you get cohesion(suction) under the base. A fine scotchbrite pad can do the trick in a pinch.

Hertel Super Hot Sauce or Racing 739 is a great choice for varying conditions.

Good luck,

Ron
