What is a good base snow depth?
Question
I want to go snowboarding this week and the mountain has a base snow depth of 45 and a mid snow depth of 50. Surface Conditions: Groomers are in good shape, with icy spots & pow stashes and no new snow within the last 24 hours. I am unsure of how to tell if these are good conditions. How do I tell if these conditions are good and what should I look for in the future?
Answer
Hey Tammy,
A base of 45 to 50 should have most things covered on the groomed runs. Going off the groomed, you could be taking a chance of hitting something buried in the snow. It may amount to just some minor or possibly major damage to your board but the real risk is injury to yourself. I use this rule of thumb, Over 36", groomed is good, Over 60" everything is good.
Hope this helps.
Keep on boarding,
