Equipment for beginner skater

Question
I'm interested in learning to skate for fun and exercise.  Can you give me some advice on what to look for when buying my first pair of rollerblades?  I don't really know anything about skates so any advice you have to offer is appreciated.
Thanks for your time,
Brenda

Answer
Brenda, I am thrilled you want to start inline skating and are looking to begin with the right skates. I want to say to you first off that usually you get what you pay for. I like to get the money issue out of the way so that people can then focus on what they need from a skate. You are going to pay somewhere around $100-150 for a good pair of skates. This is important cuz if you try to save money and get a substandard skate it will be uncomfortable to wear and hard to use. Then you will never want to skate and you have finished with the sport before you began. I want to also interject that you could spend less if you get a good deal or you could spend more if there are certain extras you want. But remember you dont have to get all the bells and whistles for a good pair of skates. Start with a sound pair and work up from there. I will tell you that you want to look for a recreational skate because they give you the most support. They are geared more toward beginners. Also go to a sport store to buy your skates. They will be more knowledgeble about their products and have better quality. You want to try on as many different skates as they have because each brand fits differently. Try them out in the store too. I know its carpeting but it will give you an idea on how they feel in action. After the comfort of the boot (or skate) you need to look at the wheels and bearings. These will make you go faster and manuver better. Most of the basic skates have an appropriate set of wheels and bearings but know that you can change them at a later date to suit you. Go with companies like Rollerblade, Salomon, K2 (there are others) because they have a reputation for quality in this area. One more thing is the brake or "braking system". Some companies have complicated braking systems that may not be helpful to you. Check this out when you try out the skates. I recommand the old fashioned brake that is removable and doesnt get in the way of your skating. These "systems" can cause you problems because they are usually based on how you move your leg or foot and if you arent careful you can stop yourself accidently and get put off balance or fall. I think I have covered enough to get you a good workable pair of skates. Since you are beginning your skating techniques, you may want to look up an inline skating instructor for lessons. They can put you on the right track and help you not aquire bad habits. Look on www.IISA.org for more info and a list of instructors. This is a great resource tool as well. Last but not least I want to put in your head about something VERY IMPORTANT for all skaters. Dont forget your protective gear! You need a helmet, wrist guards, elbow and kness pads. If you get badly hurt you will never want to skate again so please be safe!
Good luck and if I can help you further, just ask!
