RollerBlading/Skating

Question
Hey, Pat!
I'm a 53 yr. old male - beginner skater. I want to be a heck of a lot more confident than I am now ... which is not great.  I own skates  - but just now getting the urge to move!  I have allowed myself to get pretty badly out of shape and somewhat overweight - but my body has responded well in the past.  I fancy myself as gliding around town and the parks, weaving through crowds - lovin' and livin!  Suggestions that will help me to that image?  I pretty much need a kick in the pants!

Answer
Hi Jon,
Whether you are roller skating or roller blading...I would suggest you sign up for some classes at your local rink.  You said you need a kick in the pants and a committment might be just what you need.

They will teach you the proper technique for pushing and posture which will give you the confidence you need.

Most sets of classes run either 4 or 6 weeks long and by the time they are done, you should feel pretty steady on your feet, the weather will be warmer and you'll be ready to venture out to the parks.

If you desire a more personal (one on one) type lesson, most rinks offer private lessons too.

Lessons are important for new "adult" skaters because it's easy to create "bad" habits which are very hard to change once you have been doing them for a while.  Learn the correct way first.....it saves time and effort and is not so frustrating.

Let me mention one thing about skating outside.  Roller blades are a little safer than roller skates.  If you are roller blading and hit a stone, the skate will kick the stone off to the side where roller skates will most likely stop you dead and you'll be rolling in the grass or on the concrete.  Make sure you were safety equipment outside...wrist guards and knee pads are most important.

Just set your sites on your goal and with the proper instructions you will be gliding around town in no time.

Good Luck and if I can help any further, please feel free to write me again.

Pat
