Curling toes while skating
Question
I was reading through some of the questions posted by other skaters, and noticed one point where you referred to curling one's toes while skating. What are the implications of doing so? I am a moderately good skater, and I am about to start some 'easy' aggressive skating for fun. I do occasionally curl my toes when I am skating, though. I think it gives me better grip, or something. How does this habit get started, and what are some good ways to break it?
Thank you!
Answer
Hi Jill....
I'm not quite sure what you mean by curling your toe? I'll have to go back and read some of the things I've written I guess. lol
What I have talked about is pehaps when buying new skates and fitting them properly. I've said that you want them to fit like a glove. Because if they're too big you have to curl or grip your toes to keep them snug on your feet.
The only other time I can recall talking about toes is if you have trouble staying on a particular edge. If the toe turns out to far it engages the hip which creates all kinds of problems regarding balance.
Sorry I couldn't be more helpful. I'll try to go back and see exactly what I was referring to. If you find the section and I haven't answered your question, please let me know where you found it. Maybe the date it was asked or answered?
To ease your mind, there is a natural tendency to grip or dig your toes in at the end of each push stroke. If that's what you are talking about , it's perfectly fine. If you do it because your skates are to big then that's another story and should reconsider different boots.
