Persistent Ankle Pain After Skating

Question
I bought a pair of K2 Exo 6.0s about a year ago, but unfortunately I have persistent ankle soreness after skating with them. They should be broken-in at this point.

The pain is not horrendous, but it does prevent me from comfortably skating on back to back days. If I press on my ankles with my hand or a foot, there is definitely sensitivity that borders on pain--up to 48 hours after my last skate session, depending on the intensity of the session (I typically skate at a fast pace for 45-60 minutes).

I've always had a certain degree of pain in my ankles after blading, regardless of the skate. Are certain people prone to ankle pain? Or is it perhaps my skating style? I'm a pretty good skater. I fly on those things, and I wouldn't call myself a novice. But perhaps I'm pushing off or striding incorrectly. The skates themselves are the same size as my regular feet, and I tried on 10.0, 11, etc. to make sure the 10.5 felt the best in the store. Or is it possible that my ankles aren't conditioned yet? I haven't consistently skated. I always seem to give up a program 2 or 3 weeks in (perhaps due to the pain, eh).

What's my problem? What should I do? I love to skate and don't want the pain to detract from my enjoyment.

Thanks.

Answer
Hi Ryan,
I wish I had an answer for you but I don't.  The skate is made for comfort and daily skating workouts so I have a feeling that there's more going on than I could help you with.

It could possibly be that your ankle pain comes from skating to hard and not doing it on a regular basis but again, I would only be guessing.

I did check and there is a sports medicine doctor on the all experts web site that can perhaps answer you better.  I would suggest you try asking him the same questions.  But keep in mind......the information he may give you is only an educated guess.  I'm sure an accurate diagnosis is very hard without seeing you in person.

I would seriously consider going to see a sports medicine doctor if you do not get results from the all experts doctor.

Go to the mail web site and in the search box type in "sports medicine doctor".  If there is more than one expert, write to all of them and see if their answers agree.

If they do, they try what they suggest.  But if not....go see an actual sports medicine doctor.  You will save time and frustration in the long run.

I hope you find an answer to your problem.  Good Luck

Pat
