kinds of skates

Question
what's the difference between "sidewalk" roller skates and "rink" skates -- can they be used interchangeably by my 6 year old starting to skate grandson.  If not, what do you recommend for first skates.  thanx

Answer
Hi Helen,
By all means, if you have a choice, outdoor wheels work better for multiple surfaces. The wheels are softer & more forgiving on the harder outdoor terrain & will give him more grip indoors which I recommend for a novice skater.
Indoor or rink wheels are harder, less forgiving outdoors & have more slide & less grip indoors, which is what a more advanced skaters or dance skaters requires.
Also keep in mind when buying skates for a 6yr. old that he will grow out of his skates quickly so buy a size larger & use a thicker sock in the beginning & let him grow into the skate, unless you don't mind the expense of replacing them more often. By going up a size he'will probably be able to use them for 2 seasons rather than 1.
Be sure to buy him a helmet, wrist guards, Knee & elbow pads for years of safe, enjoyable skating.
Hope this helps..............Lezly (Lezly Skate School - www.SkateGuru.com )
