Inline Skates
Question
Hi !
I have a 4 year old boy and a 8 year old girl. At the moment they can skate using the 4-wheels skates. Shortly we intend to get them onto inline skates. As I surf the net for inline skates, I see there is a wide range of inline skates based on the type (and dimensions) of the wheels, the brand names, so on so forth. Would you help me understand what to look for when buying inline skates ? Do you have any specific recommendations based on age group ?
Thanks.
Anil
Answer
Hi Anil,
There's a lot to consider when putting young kids on inline skates. 1st...how well do they skate on the quads? If they are not well balanced and don't have a good push, do not put them on inlines yet.
Kids ankles need to be strengthened before trying inlines and they need to know how to control their skates. Meaning they need to have good balance, they need to know how to stop and they should have a well balanced push where they can roll quite a long distance on one foot.
If you feel they are ready for inlines I would suggest having them try the rental inlines at your local roller rink before buying them. I might be a good idea to let them take a few classes also, so they get a feel for them and learn how to control them. I've seen many parents buy their kids inlines only to find out the kids do not like them as well as the quads.
One thing to watch very closely with inlines is that the kids are not allowed to skate with their ankles turning inward. This can damage young skaters ankles if allowed to do this for any length of time.
I can't recommend a specific pair because it depends on how much you want to invest and how well your kids skate.
I would go to your local rink and talk to a sales person to see what they recommend for your kids age and ability. They have catalogs you can look through and they can explain the benefits of each type of skate. You don't necessarily have to buy them right now but you will certainly gain some information about what to look for when you are ready.
Good Luck.....if I can be of any further help, please let me know.
