rollerblade wheels are too fast
Question
i received a very nice pair of rollerblades as a gift, but they are a bit too advanced for me i think. the wheels are very fast and i have a hard time slowing down. the size is 82mm, 80a. can i switch them out with a different size that i may have more control over, that arent so fast? and also, is it necessary to change out every wheel on the skate?
Answer
Hi Dawn,
Sure you can switch them to a smaller wheel and that will help you to go a little slower. Yes, you will have to change all the wheels. If you leave a couple of the larger wheels on and only put a couple of the smaller wheels on, the smaller wheels won't touch the ground, so it will be like not having them at all.
To switch wheels you will have to have the bearings pulled out of the old wheels and pressed into the new wheels. If you don't have the proper equipment (bearing press) to do this, take your skates to a local roller rink and they will do it for you for a small fee.
Another thought might be: Keep the wheels you have and instead of spending money on smaller wheels, take that money and put it towards some skating lessons/classes so you can learn to control the larger wheels. The group classes offered at most roller rinks are very inexpensive and very helpful. They teach you the basics of balance, how to push and how to stop plus other skills that you might enjoy.
Good Luck on whatever you decide. If I can help with any further questions, feel free to write me again.
