Shin pains during hockey
Question
I play roller hockey i had played for years without these shin pains however its been a solid 2 years or so and i have relatively new skates. I'm experiencing sharp pains in my shins only when I'm turning a lot (obviously in hockey you have to make sharp turns frequently at times) when i skate up and down the rink there are no problems but these turns just shoot pain up my leg
Answer
Hi Elijah,
Well, I can't say for certain because I'm not a doctor but my guess is that because of the stiffness of your boot, when you turn either the tongue or part of the boot presses against a nerve or tendon which is causing your pain.
Try placing a blister pad (soft sponge pad) under your sock. Put it on the top of your ankle where your ankle would bend upwards if you were trying to lift the front of your foot up. Or if you feel the pain on one particular side, place the blister pad more towards that side.
When you turn fast you create torque in your body. Most likely your upper body turns before your lower body which would naturally stress your ankles, shins and hips.
Along with the blister pads, try bending your knees more when you go to turn. That may help also. Sometimes if the skates are laced up to tight, that will cause the same kind of pain.
Good Luck, I hope some of this helps.
