Kickflips, Pop Shuv-its and a dialema amongst skaters
Question
Hi, i have a number of questions to ask, first i will start with a problem that i am having.
When i try to kickflip, i flip the board but i dont land on it, i allways land right next to the board, can you give me any tips on how to land on it?
Also, I skate 'goofy' and when i try to pop shuv-it i can only get one foot on the board. Again, have you any tips.
Another thing, this is a big problem in the place i live. All the skatboarders, bmx'ers and rollerbladers hang out at the local magistrates court. But we allways get chucked off there by the police, so we move on to a different place and we get chucked off there, this continues so that we are always moving on. People complain that we shouldn't be alowed to skate on the street but the thing they dont understand is that the street is the only place we can skate as we dont have a skatepark. The only place that understands us is the localskate shop, but it is only a small shop so they cant really do much. The local council dont want to spend the money they have on a skatepark, so what can we do? Is there anything we can do to justify our rights and make them build a skatepark?
Sorry for the length of the questions, any help is much appreciated.
Thanks
Sean ;-)
Answer
Hi, Sean sorry it took so long to respond but I have been quite busy lately.Well I can't really answer your first two questions because i'd really have to see for myself what your doing wrong. I can tell you two things the first being get a friend or friends to tape you from multiple angles and then watch the footage of what your doing wrong. Second being I had the biggest problem with kickflips couldnt get that back foot took two years to get that trick down you really just have to experiment and youll have it for life.
As far as the skatepark issue goes. First off everyone gets kicked out of everywhere thats the life of a Skateboarder you gotta learn to deal with it. I get kicked out everyday. Also as a Skateboarder you also have to learn as grim as this may sound you have no rights. Cops,Judges and people in power control your rights and destiny you have no right to skateboard on anywhere other than the sidewalk or a skatepark legally.
Pretty stupid sounding huh? Well thats what Ive learned by reading up on the laws. And your not going to get the law changed. Now you say you want a skatepark. Two things to consider if you get a skatepark that means they will crack down on you that much harder if you skate on the street if you get a park. Second do you have a plan? Now you state in your letter that the skateshop is small and cant help you out. Thats crap no matter how small they are they can help, whens the last time youve seen a big skateshop? Go to the shop and talk to the owner seeing as how he is a business owner in the community maybe you can get him to go with you to a town meeting and voice your opinion. Draw up plans, land proposals, reasons why you need a skatepark, point out the fact that football baseball and tennis players get their own field free of harassment and your doing the same thing but getting hasseled for it. Get a plan get organized if you want a skatepark you make it happen dont idly sit on your ass expecting the city to make a skatepark you gotta be heard get petitions signed in school, dress up nice go to a city council meeting present all the things ive listed above. If they turn you down go to every city council meeting until they approve it. My point is BE A NUSIANCE dont let them sleep until you get what you want. Just make sure it is presented in a proffesional manner that is resonable and makes sense.
I hope this letter has helped you and inspired you to do something about your situatuion.
Sincerely,
Edward Ivanov
