Question
I am planning a purchase of a new ................................45 and I am wondering about the best brand to buy. Colt, Kimber, S&W, or custom. I want a 5" barrel and something fairly accurate. Would I be further ahead to buy used and have some work done on it.

It depends a lot on your budget and what you want to do with it. The Colt Gold Cup is popular for NRA bullseye shooting, custom guns are popular for action shooting. Of course, both of these are fairly expensive. I use several Auto Ordnance 1911s, each customized for the particular type of shooting. It is not difficult to do the customizing yourself by buying parts and kits available through ads in shotgun news. If you use a gunsmith, you can easily drop $1000 or more in customizing.

My suggestion would be to buy a 1911 from Springfield armory with the features you want, additional customizing you decide later that you want can be added yourself.
