value of firearms
Question
My husband is ill and has an extensive collection of firearms, mainly for hunting. How can I find out what they are worth and how do I go about selling them
Answer
Marchant,
There are a variety of ways in which to accomplish both issues.
As for finding out value, seek out a firearms dealer in your area (yellow pages) and find out which ones do gun appraisals. They will be able to inspect the guns and give you both retail and dealer value on same.
Many dealers will also take your gun/s on consignment and display them at their premises until sold. You of course will have to pay the dealer a percentage for handling the sale and paperwork. However, I think it would be money well spent.
You could also advertise them yourself and attempt to sell them but I do not recommend this course of action for several reasons. Let a licensed dealer take care of this for you. If for no other reason than your own security.
If you have a large quanity of firearms, you may also want to consider putting them up for auction. You would still want to get an independant appraisal so you have some idea of the value of the guns.
Some of the larger dealers/retailers such as Cabela's Gun Libray will both appraise and purchase your firearms outright. In which case you are not bothered with all of the peripheral issues. Its just something to consider.
I hope this gets you started on your way in finding a way to take care of the collection. If I can be of any further assistance, just let me know.
Good luck and thank you for the question.
