Getting started shooting .22 comp.
Question
What would be a good, bolt action rifle to start with?
I shot air rifle competition for two years a military school, and would like to start with smallbore and work my way up to long range 800m+ shooting.
Where do I find information and a coach?
Thanks,
Christopher
Answer
Hi,
I would go to
http://clubs.odcmp.com/cgi-bin/clubSearchState.cgi
and find a local CMP affiliated gun club.
While you will need a ear protection, eye protection, shooting coat, glove mat and sling;
most clubs will have "club guns" available for used by new shooters. .22 LR target rifles can be very expensive. A used Remington Rangemaster or Winchester model 52. Either can be had for a around $400. Its close to impossible to wear one out.
Once your in the club there no need to wait to start hi-power rifle. Again most will M1 Garand Rifle "club guns" to use. Standard 4 position matches are shot at 200, 300 and 600 yards. Once you fired in matches you will qualify to buy rifles and ammo from the cmp.
The NRA is another resource for finding a club.
