Savage Fox Model B 16 Gauge
Question
I have inherited a double-barrel (side by side) 16 gauge Savage Fox Model B with 28 inch barrels (2 3/4 inch chamber). It was made at Chicopee Falls, Mass. (It does not appear to have a serial number.) It has two silver or nickel triggers, a somewhat dark stock and forestock which I assume are Walnut. (The forestock is not the beaver tail design and it does not have a screw on the bottom side.) The underside of the action, i.e. just in front of the triggers, has a wildlife scene which appears to be ducks flying over a marshland.
I am curious about several things. First, I am wondering if the outside of the action was originally dark blue like the barrels or would it have been a brighter finish, i.e. more silver or nickel in appearance?
Secondly, the barrels don't indicate whether they are full choke, modified or whatever. Should I take it to a gunsmith for this information?
Finally, the gun is in good condition and I am curious about the approximate value. ?
Answer
Gerard,
As I'm sure that you know, there were many variations of the Fox Model B. I won't pretend to know each and every version of same but will attempt to help you with the information/knowledge that I have available.
Beginning in the early 50's it had a case hardened frame, double triggers, and slim forearm. By the late 50's Savage added a beavertail forearm.
In the early 60's a version was added that had a satin chrome receiver. Some early versions were engraved with the duck scene. Later with a fox. (I also have record of additional versions at/near the same time)
In 1968 (gun control act) Savage began serial numbering all of the guns. Since yours has none, and combined with he above info, it is another indication as to the vintage.
By the early 70's the 16ga. was no longer available.
As for the choke/s, I agree that the best way to determine exactly how they are choked is to have a gunsmith measure same and advise. I would be willing to bet that you will have Mod/Full but of course I have no way of being certain.
As for value, A Fox M-B (Chicopee Falls, Mass) are listed at NIB-$800 / Exc.-$750 / V.G- $500 / Good- $400 / Fair- $350 / Poor- $300
I hope that I've been able to at least clear up some of your questions and help narrow your search/focus.
Thanks for the question Gerard.
