Suppressor Legalities
Question
A few friends and I, all firearms enthusiasts, have recently become interested in the addition of sound suppressors to our collections. I'm wondering what the legal requirements are on these contreversial objects. I live in Maryland, if that helps.
Answer
Dan,
Are guns still legal in Maryland? (Only kidding, I shoot and conduct classes in MD).
Sound suppressors are Class III items, the same as short-barreled shotguns (less than 18"), short-barreled rifles (less than 16") or full-auto guns.
You can legally acquire them at a class III dealer (closest one to you I know of is Loudoun Guns in Loudoun County, VA - there may be some in MD). You just need to pay the tax stamp. Bottom line is, if you have the $$$ and there's nothing in MD law prohibiting you from having a suppressor, you can certainly get one.
