410 pistol made by stevens
Question
Dear Sir
My grandfather left me a 410 pistol, it has some paperwork that goes with it. It's in good shape with a holster I want to appraise the gun.
What would the range be on a gun such as this?
Thank You
Todd
Answer
Todd,
The J. Stevens Co manufactured a .410 bore pistol known as the No. 35 OFF-HAND SHOT GUN. The gun came in a 8" or 12". It had a smoothbore barrel and was chambered for 2.5" shells.
There were actually two different versions......
The Off-Hand Shot Gun, which was produced from 1923 to 1929 and the Auto-Shot made from 1929 to 1934. It is thought that there may have been about 2,000 of the Auto-Shots made and about 20,000+ Off-Hands.
Stevens ceased production of these guns after the passage of the National Firearms Act in 1934 at which point the gun was selling for about $12 new.
In "good" condition both models would have an approximate retail value of $200.
Thank you for the question Todd.
