Shotgun Shells

I also have some shotgun shells purchased by my grandfather some 15 to 20 years ago (back when a box of buckshot ran $2.79 ) and was wondering whether or not they were safe to use. I have newer ammo I use but I also would like to know, because he did purchase a sizeable amount of said ammo and it would save me a few dollars. Remington 12g Buckshot and Turkey shots.

I don't think whether or not the shells are safe is really the issue. The issue is why risk a problem with misfires etc. for the cost of a new box of shells?

Although I personally doubt that there would be any safety issue, I would not risk the outcome of a hunt on "old ammo". I will admit to having done so myself but with both good and bad results. Additionally based upon the type shot that you are talking about, it has a rather limited use. I doubt that you need very many boxes of said ammo to check the gun and to harvest game.

I'd opt for the new stuff if for no other reason than the fact that the major manufactures have greatly improved their products in "15 to 20" years. You would be doing yourself a favor in the long run.
