Springfield model 944
Question
Thank you in advance for any help you can give.I recently was left a rather old looking shotgun due to the passing of my grandfather.I have not been able to find any info on the internet about it.The gun is in fair condition. The blueing is somewhat worn.Any info as to when it was manufactured and what monetary value would be greatly appreciated
Answer
Roy,
Actually your "Springfield" was manufactured by the J. Stevens Arms Co. They manufactured well over a dozen single barrel, hinged action single shot shotguns. They were all similar in quality and appearance and were designed as inexpensive, utility grade firearms.
In 1864 J. Stevens began doing business. In 1888 it was incorporated as the J. Stevens Arms & Tool Co. It operated under same until 1920 when it taken over by the Savage Arms Co. It has operated as an independent division since.
There is currently little or no collector interest in any of these arms. If the 944 is in "good" condition it would only have a retail value of approximately $75.
Thank you for the question Roy.
