first gun for my boys
Question
I am considering purchasing a Springfield .22 model 188h for my two boys ages: 7 and 12 for their first rifle. It shoots short, long, and long rifle. A guy is selling it for only $70.00 and it's in good shape so it seems like a good deal. Would you recommend this rifle or should I buy a new one, I couldn't find anything about this rifle on the web. I really want a safe, reliable weapon that will allow them to shoot accurately out to 25 yards. Thank you.
Answer
Hi,
This should be the "house brand" of the Savage 188H semi auto .22 cal rifle. $70 is about what its worth.
Personally I would not recommend a semi auto for teaching kids of that age. It's too easy for an accident to happen.
Look for a bolt action single shot rifle. A bolt action repeater is the 2nd choose. For $50 to $100 there many made by Winchester, Mossberg, Savage and Marlin out there.
Not to mention house branded ones from Sears, Montgomery Ward, JC Pennys, and Western auto.
