handgun calibres
Question
In considering the purchase of a new handgun would it be prudent to consider some other calibre than 380 for ammunition cost etc.
Answer
I'll assume that you are planning to use the gun for personal protection, rather than competitive target shooting.
The .380 ACP is often used for personal protection. I use one when I need a small gun, due to insufficient clothing to cover a larger gun (like in the summer, when it's hot). In that case, I carry a Walther PPK/S. But, when it can be concealed, I prefer to carry a .45 ACP. A 1911 style, like one from Thompson Auto Ordnance. A new one that I also like is the XD from Springfield. The .45 ACP is more powerful than .380 ACP, and is a better choice for protection.
An in-between caliber, and one that seems to be the most popular for personal protection, is the 9mm parabellum (often just called 9mm). It is available in many styles of pistols. The Springfield XD is also available in 9mm.
Hope this helps!
