long range rifles

QUESTION: I recently inherited a remington model 760 .35 cal with a renfield 4x scope with a quickswitch mount. I have read on the internet that this is a medium range gun that is great for hunting. I do not hunt. I love long range plinking and 2 dealers want to sell me a Savage .308 package for a grand. Should I just be happy with grandpappy's rifle or should I shuck out the bucks for something that will shoot accurately. I am looking to hit something at over 300 yards. I am trying eliminate the feeling that I could have purchased a surplus gun and had just as much fun. Any suggestions?  Thanks,  john zunich

ANSWER: For over 300 yards .35 Remington won't really work. .308 would be fine. $100. for a Savage sounds high, unless it is their premium gun and has good glass. I will say Savage makes one of the best factory guns for the money, but that sounds high. A surplus Mauser with a new barrel would be a cheaper route. You could sell your gun on Gunbroker.com and probably get $400. or so, then turn around and for $1-200. more have a new gun built for long-range. Good luck.

QUESTION: Won't be selling grandpappy's gun but can you recommend a good model Savage. The one I saw had a scope and bipod. I think I will buy a mauser later so do you have a preference on a Savage model or perhaps recommend a good place to shop online?  Thanks,  john zunich
ANSWER: I notice you have asked me numerous questions, which I have answered, taking my time and giving a thoughtful response. I see you have asked every other "gun expert" the same question...and all our answers are somewhat parallel. Stop asking, buy a Savage 110, .308, any configuration, bipod is another $50. for a no-frills one, get a 3-9x scope, or 4-24 if you want to shoot way out there. Should be around $7-800. total, cheaper used. Have fun with grandpa's rifle for hunting or plinking, and stop wasting my time rehashing the same questions.

QUESTION: Sorry you feel that way. I really do appreciate all your answers but wanted to get as many opinions as possible and in the end I will purchase the Savage. It wasn't an inconvenience, and I guess it would be a big decision picking something out for the first time. Try searching Gunbroker.com, punch in Savage 11 .308, or Savage varmint, etc. Most guys who shoot long range take good care of their guns so used would probably be okay. Let me know how it goes.
