Gun value?
Question
I have a 20gauge dbl. barrel Newport, Model CN (cannot find a serial number anywhere) that was handed down from my grandfather to father to me. I'm guessing it was purchased in the 1920's or -30's, maybe slightly earlier. Do you have any idea of it's worth? Thanks in advance for any assistance you may be able to give.
Answer
Ron,
The Newport firearm was a trade name found on firearms of H&D Folsom Arms Co. on shotguns made for Hibbard, Spencer, Bartlet and Co. of Chicago.
Folsom, H&D Arms Co. was also the distributor of double and single barrel shotguns produced by Crescent Firearms C. of Norwich, Connecticut. Folsom owned and later sold to Savage Arms Co., the Crescent Firearms Co., Davis Warner Co. and Baker Gun Co. around 1930.
Most information obtainable for the shotgun would be under the "Crescent Firearms Co". As for giving you an exact value, it would extremely difficult to do with any large degree of accuracy due to the fact that there were over 40 different models/versions.
With that said, I can tell you that your gun should be very similar to a Stevens model 311 (Stevens would have been producing these doubles during the 30's and 40's). For the sake of trying to give you some idea of value a 311 in "good" condition is averaging about $350 to $400 retail value.
If you really want to nail and exact value down you will need to deliver the gun to a qualified person who can personally inspect the gun and provide you with a written appraisal.
I hope this helps and thanks for the question Ron.
