Winchester 1894 38-55 serial 18809
Question
We have a Winchester 1894 38-55 serial 18809. I believe that should be a 1895-1900 manufacture. It appears to have gold plating an is engraved on both sides (running deer). What seems odd when I compare to rifles online is that the barrel is nickel? (chrome like) and round. Any insight would be very helpful. I measured the barrel at 19 1/4 inches. I can send photos if that would help.
Answer
Well your rifle was made in 1895 (carbine actually), I have seen old Winchesters left in the "white" silver, and I believe, at that time, your could have a gun made any way you liked, right from the factory.Although it may have been ordered in nickel plate, when a gun is that vintage it's hard to know if it was originally like that or done afterwards. It sounds like a nice clean gun, engraved, worth quite a bit. It would almost be worth going through the Cody Museum and getting provenance (documentation) on who ordered the gun, where it was shipped, finish, etc, which costs about $50.-75. but is worth it. Thanks. Would love to see pictures of it!
