defensive hangun ammunition types

Question
ive been boucing around the different types of ammo i use in my carry weapon, normally a 9mm (used be be baretta 92 but ive now aquired a ruger P95DC) and what is the major difference in using JHP and HydraShok ammo if the grains are the same and muzzle velocity is nearly also? what does the central post in HydraShok rounds really accomplish (i.e. how does it add in expansion)? and i aquired some 125gr federal +P hollow points (marked HST) what is your opinon of those versus 147gr HydraShok by the same manufacturer, and what does the HST stand for? And possibly what is your opinion on Ranger Talons (by winchester), the legalized version of Black Talons (?). Thankyou for your help.

There are lots of good defense rounds out there.  In terms of my own personal preference, I like Hornady TAP.  Depending on the caliber, you can get +P from Hornady as well.

Now, to your specific question.  JHP vs HydraShok is pretty much like the difference between Folgers coffee vs Maxwell House.  They are different brands with slightly different characteristics, but that's about it.  Some say the post in the HydraShok displaces fluid as the round enters the body causing increased pressure on the inside of the cavity that aids expansion.  Frankly, I'm not sure based on some of the tests I've seen that it makes much difference.

I have heard and read really good things about the Federal HST round.  Honestly, I don't know what HST stands for, but in the test results I have seen on expansion of the HST vs the HydraShok, the HST is impressive.  After expansion, the HST 147gr. +P round basically covers a nickel.  Much larger than the HydraShok.  Penetration was also good. Personally, I'd go with the HST.  Even in 124gr. the HST works well although it does not have the same level of penetration as the 147gr. HST.

Regarding my opinion on Winchester SXT which is the 'replacement' for the Black Talon, they are a good reliable round, but there is much better stuff out there.  I'd go with either the Hornady TAP or the Federal HST rounds.
