Belgium browning barrel improved cylinder
Question
QUESTION: Jim,
You recently on Dec 8th had a question from someone who had a belgium browning light 12. I have one from my Dad but am looking for an improved cylinder for it as it has a full choke barrel. Would it be possible to pass my e-mail to John (I believe) who may be wanting to sell the improved cylinder barrel. I am not sure how this works but am looking for one by my light 12. Here is the question that was sent to you.
Question
I have two guns that I want to sell and was wanting to know their worth.
1. One,Browning, Light Twelve, 12 GA, semi-automatic shotgun, serial #36340, with one improved cylinder barrel, serial #F37031; and one full choke barrel, serial #F29366, all were made in Belgium. In very good condition.
2. One Winchester Model 70, 30-06 SPFLD, serial #561008, with a Buelhler scope mount and a Leupold Vari-X 3X9 scope. In good condition.
And Here was your answer:
John,
A light 12 New in the Box, round knob, vent rib, and no pad will sell for $1450-$1600 right now. The barrel will bring $125-$150. This is assuming everything is in mint condition. If the shotgun has some scratches, dings, blue ware, you can expect less. Typically, the more sought after A-5's have a vent rib, no pad, 98+ to New In Box condition. As far as your Winchester, I don't follow them close enough to venture a guess. You might consider looking at the Blue Book of Gun Values book. Hope this helps.

ANSWER: Bill,
I would suggest watching E-bay or looking at the Gun Digest Magazine. Both have a lot of barrels for sale from time to time. The Browning Collectors Association generally has several ads with barrels in the back of their newsletter. The website for membership information is www.BrowningCollectorsAssociation.com or just google Browning Collectors Association. I will try to pass on your message to the gentleman above.

---------- FOLLOW-UP ----------
QUESTION: Jim,
A quick follow-up. Does Browning light 12 make a variable choke and does it work well or is it recommended. How much do they run. Do other manufacturers make a high quality barrel that can be used? Thanks again for your prompt response.
Answer
Bill,
Your best chance to find an improved barrel would be to find a Japanese (Mirouku) made barrel for the newer Japan made A-5's for Browning. As far as I know they are inter-changeable with the older Belgium made A-5's. Keep in mind, if you are shooting your A-5 barrel made in Belgium, DO NOT shoot steel shot thru it. The barrel will bulge. Lead only. The Japanese made A-5 barrels will shoot both lead and steel and I believe they come with adjustable chokes. Hope this helps.
