jennings Model 9

Question
QUESTION: Hi
I have an old Jennings model 9 handgun. Recently it became misplaced during moving.
I have to report it missing. The handgun is registered to me legally.
The problem is I also cannot find the paper work.
However I do have the box the pistol came in. There are 2 barcodes on the box.
One appears to be a standard product bar code like you would find on any general item.
The other appears to be a serial number.

My question is...did jennings print the serial number on the box the handgun was sold in?
If so then at least I have the serial number to report.
Hope you can help.

Thanks!
Bob

ANSWER: Bob,

Too bad about your gun.  I have heard of this type of thing happening before.  The other number on the box is very likely the serial number.  Most manufacturers do print the serial number on the box as well as the gun.

I'd use that number to report your gun stolen.  This will allow the police to monitor the pawn shops to see if it turns up there.  If you find it later in box, give them a call back and let them know you found it.  I hope this works out for you...I have to confess, I am world famous in our house about 'hiding things' from myself.

Best of luck,

Doug

QUESTION: Thanks Doug! I'm going to take the box to a gun shop and see if its possible to get a copy of my paperwork to prove the gun is legally mine. Do you think that getting a copy or at least something in writing to prove ownership? By the way, I live in Pennsylvania.
Once again, thanks for a quick reply!

Thanks!
Bob

Answer
Bob,

If you go to the gun shop where you bought the gun, they may be able to give you a copy of the BATF form 4473 that was originally completed when you bought the gun.  It will probably help them find the form if you can remind them approximately when you bought it.  Some gun stores have good filings system, some don't.

The other thing that I would do is get the police to provide you a copy of the police report that they generated when reporting it stolen.  That will give you some record of claimed ownership and will also give you something that you can use to make an insurance claim if you want to.

If you can get a copy of the 4473 you originally completed at purchase, that is the best.  If not, the police report will at least be something.

Hope this helps you out...

Doug
