Question
Paul, Can you tell me the value of a Winchester Mod 1886 38-56 with a round 26" barrel? A saddle ring carbine S/N 118722 with a case hardened receiver, not a take down unit and a crescent butt plate. I understand they only made 159k of these. It is in very good condition. Also is there a way to see if a gun was stolen at one time?
Answer
Hi,
This really should get an appraisal done on this by a gunsmith even if its just for insurence reasons. With a barrel that long its not a carbine. Those have 20" to 22" barrels.
I can't tell which of 7 model variation it is without seeing it in person. By the serial number yours was made in 1898.
Its worth $500 & $25000 depending on exact model and condition.
Unless it was stolen recently its unlikily to be able to find out if it was ever stolen.
