Browning stock
Question
Doug, I have a 270 Browning Bolt, serial # 2L 14058 which has a stepped down barrel. It was made in Belgium. Question-- 1. What model is it? 2. It requires a new stock. Where can I purchase a new stock for this rifle?
Answer
James,
OK...what you have is a 1962 FN High Power Safari Grade rifle with a Mauser action. It is most likely the 'basic' model as your caliber was not really available with the higher grade models. Something you need to be aware of regarding the current wood on the gun. The wood was 'salt cured' rather than being kiln dried and if you have stored the gun in an environment with any moisture, there may be some rust under the wood. You might want to check the gun under the wood surfaces.
As far as the stock is concerned, I'd suggest that you try Great American Gunstock Company at http://www.gunstocks.com/ for your stock. They do some really nice work. Your rifle is a nice rifle and deserves a nice stock. I will tell you it is going to be a little tough to find a lot of choices as neither Numrich or Brownell's have stocks for a Browning rifle of this age.
See what the guys at Great American Gunstock Company can do for you...that's probably your best bet.
Cheers,
Doug
