45ACP vs 45LC
Question
WHat is the differencebetween the 45ACP and the 45 LC bullet?
Answer
Pat,
The 45 Long Colt was originally a 'black powder' cartridge, although modern versions use smokeless powder. The bullet weight is 255 grains and originally developed muzzle velocities approaching 1000 fps. It was a very powerful load and was the most popular cartridge around in the period between 1875 and 1900. Modern versions still develop muzzle velocities of around 850 fps. The 45 Long Colt also has a 'revolver' style case.
The 45 ACP or 'Automatic Colt Pistol' round has a slightly smaller bullet at 230 grains, has approximately the same muzzle velocity. The 45 ACP is not a good hunting round as it has a shorter case (lowered pressures) and does not have the heavier weight bullet. However, it is more compact and since the case is designed for an automatic or semi-automatic platform, it is a superior round for military or self defense purposes.
