25 Stevens

I have just inherited a 25 Stevens,it has a hexagonal barrel for the first six inches and then round for the next 14.5 inches. It is stamped J.STEVENS T&A CO. Can I still get shells for this gun. It is in fairly good condition, can I shoot with it if I can get shells. Any other information on this gun would be greatly appreciated.

Hello Guy. Your .25 caliber Stevens is actually stamped J. STEVENS ARMS AND TOOL COMPANY.This was the name for Joshua Stevens gun and tool from 1886-1915.Your .25 caliber rimfire rifle was most likely produced during the early years of production since the .22 caliber rimfire cartridge was introduced around 1900 and took over the market place of the .25 cal.Your rifle was marketed as the 'Favorite'. You asked about the availability of ammunition in .25 caliber rimfire. I did find a web site www.ows-ammo.com. They have these for $89.99 for a box of 50. "GUN SMITH ALERT". Although you can still get the ammunition for your gun, I highly recommend that you take it to a competent licensed gunsmith before firing it. There were approximately 1,000,000 of these rifles manufactured. They really do not have a huge collector demand, selling between $75.00 and $150.00(in excellent condition).I hope I have answered your question and thank you for asking for me. Charles Gage
