Checking a handgun for mechanical problems
Question
I recently purchased a used Springfield XD40 and I was wondering how I could check this weapon to make sure that it does not have any mechanical problems before I fired it.
Answer
James,
If there is no reason to suspect any issues. I'd do a field strip of the gun, checking for obvious wear or defects in the slide, barrel or recoil spring. While you have it apart, use a flashlight to check the condition of the bore. It should be shiny and mirror-like. It should also be free of any obstructions. You may want to clean and lubricate the gun while you have it apart.
If there is nothing obviously wrong, reassemble and function check by racking the slide and pulling the trigger a few times. If everything seems to function normally, you should be good to go.
XD makes a pretty robust pistol. Not much goes wrong with them.
Enjoy your new gun!
