riot equipment
Question
What's the kind of weapon used by Police officers to suppress riots, also describe the kind of equipment used for protection, it will be very helpful if you can mention some models and brands...and maybe give me some web page links.
I'm a Peruvian citizen working for an agency in need to implement our force with specialized anti riot equipment
Thank you
Sam
Answer
This is a bit out of my area, which is specifically firearms.
Different cultures and individuals responsible for decision making will have different criteria. If the goal is to disperse a crowd without injury, Raytheon's millimeter-wave Silent Guardian System, though very new, seems to be working excellently where it is used, without causing injury.
A lower-tech, less costly, and almost as injury-free option would be hand-held OC pepper spray canisters capable of delivering their payload at a distance of up to 40 feet. Brand here is not so much of an issue as the heat delivered, which is measured in SUH (Scoville Units of Heat). Law Enforcement grade pepper spray has at least 5 million SUH (the scale tops out at 16 million). Good quality pepper spray will cause extreme discomfort, impair sight, and cause mild respiratory distress, all of which is temporary and treatable (though if used in quantity, you will need to have medical teams standing by for treatment). When OC is used, care must be taken to avoid Positional Asphyxia if subjects are to be taken into custody (the mild respiratory distress can prove fatal if the subject who was exposed to OC has hands restrained behind the back and is placed on the stomach).
Another low-tech option is water cannons. Although these carry the potential of injury, that injury is usually brought about by secondary causes (falling), and is most often not the result of the water stream itself.
Perhaps the oldest method is "riot gear," officers outfitted in protective equipment (the best of which will include helmet, face shield, protective clothing that will mitigate blows given to stomach, and large muscle groups of the arms and legs) and carrying truncheons, moving in lines to drive rioters back. This is perhaps your least desirable option because rate of injury to rioters is high, and person to person contact makes the danger for officers greater.
This is not a detailed answer, but may give you a start. My apologies again for not being more specific, but my area is firearms and tactics related to them.
