.22 cal derringer over and under
Question
I have recently aquired a Hawes Co. .22 cal magnum derringer over and under pistol, and was just curious if you could give me a ball park of what it is worth its nickel plated with a redish colored handle on the left side it says western derringer and has the serials 314xx it also has a stamp on the upper and lower barrels with a fancy 68 on the upper barrel on the right side it says made in germany and cal .22 magnum. Any help with a ballpark figure and maybe alittle history on the weapon would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Rob
Answer
Rob,
The Hawes FIrearms Company of Van Nuys, CA did not actually manufacture guns but imported them. For the most part their guns were made by J.P. Sauer and Sohn in Eckernforde, Germany. Sauer made inexpensive copies of many Colt type firearms including single action western style revolvers and derringers. They were not very expensive to begin with and are generally not considered to be collectable.
Most of the derringers made by Sauer are worth between $60 and $100 depending on their condition. Since these are not considered collectable, there is very little information on the individual models.
That's really about all I can tell you...sorry I can't give you more, but there really isn't much more.
