QUESTION: State of North Carolina
Answer
I am not an expert in NC law, but my business takes me there from time to time and do I carry a gun in that state.
As I understand it, NC has no provision for openly carrying a gun (I believe the prohibition falls under a provision they call "Going armed to the terror of the public). Therefore, if you are going to carry a gun with you, you MUST carry it concealed.
In order to do this, you need to obtain a permit to do so. NC, like a majority of States in the Union, is a "shall issue" state, which means that if you are legally able to own a gun and you complete the application process for a permit to carry it concealed, it cannot be denied to you.
Unlike other states, NC has a state-mandated training program through their DOJ for which they certify instructors. It is not difficult to find certified NC concealed handgun permit instructors.
I'd recommend finding one in your area, taking the class, and completing the requirements to obtain your CHP. Then you will not have worry about running afoul of the law, and will be providing yourself with a prudent and effective means of self-defense.
