Are jammed guns safe to play with?

Question
My 9 year old son came home from a friend's house and told me he had been playing with "broken guns".  When I called the other mother, she told me that the guns the boys were playing with were jammed and that there was no way the boys could have been hurt.  Is this true?

Answer
Depends what jammed means.  a gun can be made safe, but I only say so if the slide or bolt or cylinder was welded to prevent moving, and or sealing the barrel with weld or lead so a bullet could not be loaded and or the bolt removed and or  the firing pin removed.  Guns sold today normally come with a cable lock so the cable can be run either in the barrel or through the magazine so there no way to load the gun.

I grew up in Texas and was around guns my entire life.  We were taught they were dangerous, not a toy and you did not play with them, no matter what, so we learned to respect them and back then there were a lot less gun accidents.

If you are concerned I would go inspect the guns myself so you personally know what "jammed" means and then deal with it.  If you are still concerned, you could call the police and have them go and inspect the guns since most cops have a pretty good understanding of guns and then they could check for you.
