410 slug vs 44 mag

Question
My wife and I are heading to Alaska to do some day hiking.  Since the law is about to change and allow firearms in National Parks it is time to buy a new revolver.  We will not be hunting and probably not even need to fire but I believe in the better to have than have not..  I was talking to a friend that has a Judge and he said that with a slug in it that it compares to a .44 mag.  while i like my friend he is no expert.  Any ideas>>

Answer
The power level is similar, between the two. I assume that you are talking about personal protection? Maybe from people and bears?  The Judge is an interesting gun (I have one in 3" magnum, ss, with Crimson Trace grips), but I would much prefer to carry a .44Mag for protection.  In my opinion, the Judge is OK for in the house or car.  It is really not very accurate, as the rifling is very slight. You can hit something if it's within 3 or 4 yards, but thats getting pretty close for a bear.

I suggest a .44 Mag. with at least a 4 inch barrel and adjustable sight.  With a .44 Mag., you can get some decent accuracy. I recommend that you practice with it, adjust the sights, and be able to use it well before counting on any gun for protection.

Hope this helps!

Dave
