age of my gun

I have a Stevens model 940 4-10 gauge that has been handed down from my grandpa to my dad to me. The serial number (I'm assuming that's what it is) was found after unscrewing the forearm. It had a YO with the number 23 underneath. Can you tell me how old this gun is? I would appreciate any knowledge you might be able to share with me. Thank you!

Hello Darlin. Wow, sounds like a Conway Twitty song. Anyway, back to the question at hand. The Stevens Model 940, was manufactured from 1961 through 1970. The YO 23 alphanumeric is not the serial number, but most likely a part number or inspection number. This shotgun was made before the Gun Control Act of 1968, therefore, it was not required to have a serial number. The barrel break lever should be attached to the right side of the receiver. Most shotguns had the opening lever on the top of the tang. Not much to tell. This is a good and dependable firearm. It has a very low value of between $40-$100. The .410 will bring more. There are not many collectors of these single barrel shotguns. I, however, have a personal collection of seven and am always on the hunt for more. I make most into floor lamps.
