Colt Official Police .38

Hello sir,
I just bought an excellent condition Colt Official Police that was carried by an officer in Chicago in the 30's and 40s.  Can you please tell me when this was manufactured?  The only number that I can find which is stamped on the frame is 738841.
Your help and expertise is very much appreciated.  In case you are curious I paid $375 for it.  It is in near perfect shape (somehow).

The Colt Official Police .38 caliber started being manufactured in 1927 and continued on into the 40's. During this time, Serial numbers were not a requirement on firearms. The markings you found stamped is likely a "lot number" so that Colt could keep track of how many guns they were making. You could contact Colt and they might possibly be able to help you more with exact date of manufacture.
