Question
I have a semi-automatic ar15 (bushmaster)that I would like to install a suppressor on. This requires a "tax stamp", but I have no idea how to acquire one. The purpose of the suppressor is to reduce the report of the rifle, as I already have hearing issues...
I live in Arizona, if that makes any difference, and am a CCW permit holder.
Thanks!
Answer
Jason,
In order to purchase a suppressor in Arizona, you must purchase it from a Class 3 Federal Firearms Licensee. Generally speaking, the dealer can help you through the paperwork process. In general, the process is pretty straightforward. You will have to complete a BATF Form 4 in duplicate and send it in with 2 ATF fingerprint cards. The dealer will generally have these. You will also need a certificate of compliance for the suppressor that the dealer will provide. The BATF form 4 will have to be signed by the chief law enforcement officer of your county of residence. If you live in Maricopa County, this would be Sheriff Joe or someone in his office that has been designated for this purpose. After receiving that signature, you send in the entire packet along with a check or money order payable to BATFE. The usual wait is 2-3 months.
The form is then mailed to the dealer once BATF has approved it. They will then give you a call and you can come in and pay for your suppressor. The paperwork must be kept with the item at all times...but the dealer will probably explain all that to you.
That is pretty much it...
Regarding your hearing protection, you might consider using foam earplugs inside ear muff style hearing protection as a way to protect your hearing a little more...
Hope this helps...
