Old shotgun Info
Question
I have an old single barrel, hammer action (with the firing pin missing)shotgun with the name Springfield, J.Stevens Arms Company, Chicopee Falls, Mass, USA. The barrel is 30" long and the gun itself is in very good condition except that the firing pin that is struck by the hammer is missing and can't be fired. There are no other names or markings that I can see except to say forged steel. Can you give me any information about this gun because it really interests me and I would like to use it. Thanks, Howard Burnham (Pacific Island)
Answer
Hello, Mr. Howard Burnham. Your J.Stevens Arms Co. Springfield shotgun was manufactured from 1920 through the late 1940's. Stevens had been bought out by Savage in 1920 and used the J.Stevens title during that time period. These shotguns are not of much collectors interest, although, they were very serviceable firearms. As far as a firing pin, they are not too difficult to replace. First, have a certified competent gunsmith examine your shotgun to see if it is safe to fire. I would check with Bob's Gun Shop at www.gun-parts.com. They have a very large inventory of firing pins in stock. I hope this helps answer your question and thank you for asking for me. Charles Gage
